Treasure Hunt Week #5 (August 5, 2008)

Welcome to week #5 of the NiaDivas' Summer Treasure Hunt to find the magical you.

But first...Week #4's treasure was the WRIST. How'd you do?  Experiences to share?  Comments welcome.

Now...Onward to Week #5.

Your Body's Treasure: Clue #5

I am a deep ball and socket joint  that brings stability and power to your lower body.  When I am healthy, your pelvis can adjust to the movement of your thigh bone. I offer you great freedom of movement, speed and connect you to the strength of your base (legs). The large bone that sits within me hangs like a pendulum and can move in all directions because of me.

I Am Energized By...

The Side Kick.  Practicing the side kick is excellent conditioning for the buttock muscles and hip joint. It also improves "dynamic balance"--balance in motion.

To do the Side Kick.  Standing on one leg, pull your other heel up and back towards your buttock. Then kick to the side, with the side of your thigh facing towards the ceiling. Imagine pushing a boulder with your foot.

Engage your core as you naturally tip away from your kicking leg. Keep the knee of your standing leg unlocked and springy.

Additional Nia moves to energize this joint include: Varying foot positions such as toes pointed out, pointed in and pointed parallel. All the stances (closed, open A-stance, Riding and Cat stance. All directions of kicks (front, side, back).

In Every Day Life...

Sense me with each swing of your thigh bone. When you sink to sit, allow the back of your hip joint to open while you reach them back for your chair. As you climb steps, focus on the power of your buttock muscles engaging to swing your thigh bone in your relaxed hip socket.

We wish you a pleasant week of continuing self-discovery and finding the gems of your body!

Until next week,
