Why is NIA done barefoot?

I am curious if it is essential that one must be barefoot to participate in a NIA class. My super-flat & pronating feet require that I wear prescription orthotics to support my arches. I move quite well in shoes. And I love to dance.

Tons of folks out there are wearing orthotics and told not to even walk barefoot.

Would you let someone like me try a class?

Yes to shoes

Hi DonaLuisa,

Yes, please do give NIa a try!  It's fine to wear your shoes with your orthotics.  For those who can go barefoot, we learn to become more aware of all the information that feet provide and we strengthen the foot muscles.  Those benefits are also available with shoes, but in a different way. We do ask that the bottoms of the shoes be clean or dedicated indoor shoes, in respect of the bare-footers. Looking forward to seeing you in a Nia class!

Sincerely, Lesley Tinker, NiaDiva and Certified Nia Instructor
