Classes (No classes from July 1-Sept. 1, 2008)

LOCATION

Most Nia Divas classes are held in the Movement Studio at the south end of the first floor of the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in West Seattle (click for directions). However, be sure to check the calendar to verify the actual venue location for a particular class or event.

SCHEDULE- NiaDivas begin their summer hiatus (with no classes from July 1- Sept. 1st). We are taking a break from teaching to renew and recharge. We look forward to dancing with you starting Sept. 4th, 2008.

Nis is a cardio and whole-body conditioing program for body, mind, emotion, and spirit.  Flavored by dance arts, martial arts, and healing movement arts, Nia offers a full range of soft and strong movements to engage the yin and yang in all of us. Non-impact, done with barefeet, Nia awakens our senses and opens us to the fun and joy of moving, and of course, the health benefits.  A typical Nia class is one hour.  Each class has a focus (such as upper body mobility), starts with gentle warm-up movements before transitioning into a cardio section, and closes with cool-down stretches and floor play.  Movement is guided according to our body's design rather than to a particular stylized form.  By moving with the body's design, through Nia, we enhance our flexibility, agility, mobility, strength, and stability.  Each class is taught in levels  of light, moderate, and all-out to honor where each of us is movement-wise at that time.  Beginners are welcome at any time.  All-fitness levels welcome.

What to Wear& What to Bring

  • Wear clothes comfortable for moving, such as yoga wear, or loose-fitting pants and tops.  Layers are good as we can start cool and then warm up.
  • Nia is done barefoot, so no shoes are needed.  If you prefer wearing shoes, bring indoor-dedicated shoes that allow forward and lateral movement.
  • Bring water to drink.
