Uneducated first impressions
It seems that some of you folks are visiting this website looking for info about the new "Nia unplugged" DVD. Wouldn't want you to go away with nothing more than what we took from the nianow.com site! Until one of the real Divas gets around to doing the deed, I'll post my uneducated observations, just to get you started. The outside cover indicates this DVD belongs to the Dance series and is intended for Intermediate to Advanced levels. (For beginners, they recommend Global Unity.) "Dance to Drums" is printed on the front cover. On the back you'll find, "Join the creators of Nia and discover its extraordinary power and passion. As you dance to live percussion, let the music seduce your body, mind, emotions and spirit to unwind, and let go." The DVD is, indeed, mostly percussion "sweetened" occasionally with subtle background vocals and wind instruments. There are six chapters to this DVD. Chapter 1 is Introduction and introduces the unplugged concept. Chapter 2 is about setting focus. Warming up is Chapter 3. Workout is listed as Chapter 4. Then comes cool down, Chapter 5. And finally, meditation completes the DVD with Chapter 6. Total run time is 1 hr and a couple minutes. Carlos Rosas and Debbie Rosas alternate leading the session. Filming mostly was done facing the dancers. A message is briefly displayed at the beginning that suggests mirroring their movements. Audio and video quality are very good. Multiple filming angles kept things from getting monotonous. Artistic composition is appealing. Background dancers looked like they had fun. The pace is lively and there are no hints for what might be level one alternatives for the various moves, hence the intermediate and above recommendation. If you can keep up, you'll probably love it because it does look like a lot of fun.
Danced to it!
Nia in the comfort of your own place and time. I danced to Unplugged and loved it! The drums, which give the vast majority of the music, invited my body to move almost on its own. And, any time I wanted to pause, I could. Even though filmed "facing" us as viewers, it all works out.
Loved it!!!!!!!!!!
This is the most fun I have had doing a dvd. The percussion is like being in an African dance class. Even though I am not an intermediate dancer, I was able to get thru the workout, taking breaks when I needed it. It's easy on the knees, great for the heart and lungs. My soul loved the meditation at the end. Very sweet!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so glad to hear your
I'm so glad to hear your enjoying your Nia Unplugged DVD. It's just great having another way to do Nia at home and experience the energy of live music. Thanks for leaving your comments on our NiaDiva site. We love hearing from all Nia lovers.
Glimpses of Unplugged in Online Promo Video
Talking to Jill and Lesley, it seems that the most recent Nia Promo video contains snippets of both the Global Unity and Unplugged DVDs. So, if you're desparate to know what the new DVD looks like, go and watch that video for some quick glimpses.
After taking another glance at the Promo video, myself, looks like the clips wherein Carlos is wearing all red exercise clothing and Debbie is wearing all blue, are taken from Global Unity and the shots where they are both wearing pants with belts and Carlos has a blue top and Debbie wears a green one, those are from Unplugged.
Unfortunately, there isn't much, if any, of the Unplugged soundtrack utilized in the Promo video.
boom ditty boom ditty ba do ba go do
Betcha can't stay in your chair while watching the Nia Unplugged DVD on your computer at work!!!
I had no idea what I was getting into when I played this on my computer.
The drumming and percussion on this dvd are wild, vibrant, & energetic!! Very appropriate for Nia.
The session with Debbie & Carlos was wonderful. It brought me through a full range of emotions. It left me feeling energized, hopeful, & peaceful.
It deeply touched my body, mind, spirit, & emotions.
Can't get enough of my Nia nia nia nia nia !!!!
Thanks
I had never heard or seen a NIA class or video before. It started out well. I liked the music and the movements. (The workout is supposed to be done barefoot, but I have foot “issues” and have to wear orthotics. I kept my shoes on). Carlos and Debbie are, ahem, eccentric.
Finding a Nia class near you.
Thanks for the comment WoW Gold. There may be a Nia class close to you. Just go to the Nia HQ site at www.NiaNow.com and go to the class finder section. I hope you get a chance to enjoy Nia in person. You can always wear your shoes. Nia was created barefoot and also honors people who are healing foot issues. You may consider taking off your shoes towards the end of the class (floor play) when their is no weight baring. That way your feet can enjoy the fresh air and begin to experience movement without shoes.
Best of Luck,
Jill (NiaDiva)
It's funny
I have used Nia unplugged DVD. Truly it is very helpful. It is really funny and enjoyable. I get encouragement in exercising. Thanks for your nice effort.
NIA unplugged fantastic!
Took my first NIA class 1 week ago at a newly opened NH studio. It's 45 min away with traffic to get there, so I bought the 3 NIA dvds. Tried Unplugged today. Absolutely loved it! I loved the energy and the drums. I just lost myself in the music & movement. Love the international dance and martial arts influence & fluidity of the movements. Liked it better than the live class because the class was slower and more flowy. It was easy to follow for a non-dancer and a fun way to get cardio that did not feel like "working out". It was challenging since I'm really out of shape right now, but in a good way. I think alternating NIA and power yoga is the answer to getting myself to "want to" workout consistently again. Like the video said, there should be joy in it. As I get older it is much harder to get myself to exercise if there is no joy in it. Can't wait to try the other dvds!
